Black Jack Chews

  • The original Barratt (now Candy Land) Black Jacks are a classic British sweets and are most commonly found with their best friend Fruit Salads. Black Jacks are aniseed flavoured chewy black rectangles that are loved by children and adults alike. Children love the way that their tongues go black after munching on a few of them and adults love remembering one of the tastes of their childhood.

Black Jacks are so named because their packet used to feature a smiling golliwog on the packet back in the 1920's. Back then, this was deemed okay to use for advertising liquorice but, by the late 1980's, Barratt realised the error of their ways and rebranded the offensive packaging with a pirate logo instead. However, this logo was also gone by the early 1990's and became the distinctive black and white swirl pattern that we all remember. The design was yet again changed in 2008 to a black packet with red writing. Luckily, despite all the design changes, the taste stayed the same... yum!
